How to Display The Art of Nature Using Photography

I believe there are only two times of the year that nature can show its splendor, i.e, Spring and Fall.

What Season Displays The Most Vivid Colors? Silly Question.

Certainly, Fall is the season of color remembrance. It is a great gain to be in the right place to capture an event that can only return but once a year. In order to catch the most colorful scenes one must be willing to move from place to place even if it’s in the same general area. Sometimes a scene is optimized for only a few days in mid-October and is difficult to observe again for another year, especially in certain parts of new England. Waterfalls in the White mountain range of New Hampshire are a perfect example. I have provided a link to some local nature photos taken in southern New Hampshire in the Fall:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/slideshow/26093/fall_colors_in_southern_new_hampshire.html?cat=8

How Does One Prepare In Order To Guarantee Capturing Top Photos?

The first rule of thumb that I try to impress on anyone who asks is: Make sure you carry an extra set of batteries. I believe this is probably one of the prime reasons that even a dedicated photographer misses a unique once in a lifetime photo. Make sure you either have a fresh set of batteries or newly charged that have been checked with a reliable meter for the day you plan a photo session. It will probably happen only once after you have missed what you considered to be a prize photo.

Just A Couple Of Simple Points

Your camera has standard built-in settings, but it is wise to set the pixels per frame to the number that is comfortable for you. I usually set the “image quality” between 2 mega pixels and 4 mega pixels though lately I have been setting my frame resolution on maximum since the purchase of my 10 mega pixels camera. The ISO speed I usually set my camera to is 100. This gives me a nice all around range for shooting normal daylight scenes. Setting it higher to 200+ would help prevent blur when shooting an automobile moving at a slow rate of speed because the shutter speed will be faster. By the same token setting this number lower will limit your ability to shoot night scenes without the use of a tripod to steady the scene under the longer exposure. Since using a flash would surely stop most motion it is really not effective when the subject is more than a dozen feet away. I try to avoid using it unless absolutely necessary. A flash virtually destroys the natural color rendition of a scene.

Many freelance photographers are seldom able to capture the true art of nature. True, it does display the best of creation. Sometimes, a photographer is able to capture a true rarity. I believe there are only two times of the year that nature can show its splendor, i.e, Spring and Fall.

Fine art nature photography is a cheap way to get a top quality collection of art, one that over the years will probably become more valuable . Art and photography collectors find it easy to be drawn to digital pictures outdoor scenes, nature, and wild animals . Why? Because a whole new level of collectible photography has been reached with digital photos , which results in high resolution images that can last for years, with no loss of color .

Digital photos also reflect a photographer’s creativity in capturing a wild animal or beautiful landscape that looks real enough to touch, right down to the minutest features . Want proof? Simply look at a nature photo , one photographed digitally , and look closely at every small detail and how it’s captured – to the lovely colors and small antennae on the wings of a butterfly to landscapes and their beautiful shades and tones. Compare that to other, older photos which weren’t taken digitally . More than likely , colors aren’t true and may have faded in a small amount of time.

Unlike those older photos , fine art nature photography can be a great investment and a pleasure to look at, year after year , and the beauty is never lost. There are some very realistic digital photos while others are similar to abstract paintings . The beauty of nature is captured in each one, showing off the skill of the photographer .

Digital photos include teamwork of both nature and a photographer. What are the results ? A unique artistic creation ; captured in time, in a split second , yet as stunning – or more so – than a beautiful painting .

Intrigued ? Ready to start collecting fine art nature photography? You’ll need to consider a variety of tips. Of course the main thing is that those who aspire to have a collection should enjoy going through various photos, keep their instincts in mind and enjoy the purchase they make . You won’t find a better method of adding natural touches to the office or your home than to place a natural photo or scene up on the wall of a wild animal, bird or insect .

If a photo resonates with the viewer , that can be reason enough to purchase it . Of course, it’s still a good idea to remember several pointers. What tips do you need to keep in mind when buying digital nature photos ? In the beginning, never be too afraid to ask some questions. Learn more about the background and the experience of the photographer.

If you want a photo that is commissioned , ask if that is a possibility . Certain photographers are fine with visiting your vacation home, your home, or a farm and taking specific photos of the area. This could be a highly personal and lovely way to add style to a home or office .

Inquire about paper that they usually use and find out if prints or photos are archival quality . Ask about their passions and special skills . Just like you are able to benefit from knowing about painters when you buy a painting , a nature photographer can give you more information and insight about the photos, enhancing the purchaser’s experience .

One great aspect of high quality digital photos is the price . For a very reasonable price , photos can be purchased by collectors that may become worth more over the years. In the meantime , they can enjoy the beauty of nature’s wonders and provide any room with an extra special touch .

This article explains how to take amazing nature photographs. It covers the following information: choosing an object to photograph, learning how to get to an appropriate location, and choosing the right shot.

The information in this article is written for either the beginner or intermediate photographer. The author assumes that you have taken photographs before and are familiar with GPS navigation systems, Internet research and Google Earth software.

Taking great photographs begins with research and consists of three steps. The first step is to choose an object: a waterfall, a mountain, or anything that you think will make an attractive photograph. The second step is to get to the location using either your car or bike along with a reliable GPS system. The final step is to take a picture using your favorite camera. When choosing the place or landmark at which to take your picture, you can start by conducting online research on interesting places in your area. There are many opportunities for nice shots or objects for your photos in national parks or landmarks such as Yosemite National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Arches National Park, or Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. You can learn about places by downloading Google Earth software and installing it on your computer. Google Earth software will help you visit locations virtually and obtain an approximate view of the shot; it will also supply you with exact data for your GPS to aid in efficient travel. Another good idea is to visit the visitor center of a particular attraction online; it could be useful in gathering additional information and downloads that you can print out later, such as parking information, rules and trails information. The next step is to learn how to get to your destination. In this case, the best approach would be to use a car and a good GPS system so that you don’t get lost in an unfamiliar location. The last step is to set up your camera and take a few shots for selection, thereby guaranteeing that your photograph will stand out from others and represent your unique vision of the place.

Some things to consider:

Process. The dynamic range of nature, including sunny spots and surrounding shade, can easily overwhelm your camera’s capturing capability. Use exposure bracketing and combine the photographs on your computer to extend your dynamic range accordingly. Since you will need to underexpose your shot for most nature pictures, make sure your exposure time is long enough. (Tip: this is extremely difficult during the day and much easier at dawn.)

Time needed. The hike around a recreational park could take about 2 – 3 hours round-trip. Once you’ve reached your destination, it takes about 30 minutes to one hour to photograph every possible angle of an object.

Fees. The entrance fee to the entire recreational park could be as much as $25. If you possess a National Park Pass, you usually do not need to pay a fee, but you will need to display the pass in your vehicle (such as on your dashboard or windshield) while you are gone.

Difficulty getting to the place. The trails at national parks and similar locations can be difficult to maneuver, so do not make the mistake of carrying your entire arsenal of equipment; you can leave your heavy photo equipment in your car. Also, make sure to dress appropriately to protect yourself from thorns, branches, and other obstructions that are frequently found on trails.

This article taught you how to create unique nature photos. You first select an object by researching your area, then find out how to travel to its location and find a spot, and finally how to take a series of photographs.

Digital photography has forever changed the photography landscape. Has it changed the way we look at landscape photography?

In my gallery and on my website, I sell a photograph of a kangaroo on a beach. I am not the only nature photographer in Australia to have captured such a subject, so it is not a unique occurrence; but it is unusual. As such, many people have never seen such a thing with their own eyes.

Ten years ago, when film was standard, people would often ask “Where were you lucky enough to find a kangaroo on a beach?” Fair question.

Today, someone asked me “Did you superimpose that kangaroo on your computer?” Some people don’t ask; they just assume the photo is a fake. Some even want to argue with me even after I have told them where, when and how the photo was taken. People like to transfer their own limitations onto others. So, if they could not have taken that picture, they assume that nobody could. Therefore (they like to believe) it must be fake.

For nature photographers, being told your photo has been manufactured on a computer is like being accused of fraud.

The kangaroo on the beach is the most commented-on image in my collection, but it is by no means the only photo that invites doubt. These days it seems that any nature photo, if unique and perfectly captured (and isn’t that what we are all striving for?) is automatically an object of suspicion.

We have entered an era when technology has become so advanced, people have begun to doubt their own eyes when it comes to photography. It is true, some amazing things can be done with software, and many photographers find ‘photoshopping’ an image more interesting than taking the photo in the first place. This is a perfectly legitimate pursuit and one that is simply a fact of life in the modern world.

However, problems arise when people start to forget that good photography, and in particular good nature photography, existed long before the digital age. The skills of nature photography are as they have always been. An ability to read the light, to recognise and capture a spectacular sky, to simply know the time of day and the perfect weather to shoot your subject: these are the stock in trade of the nature photographer. Next comes knowledge of the camera and photography theory, along with a practiced sense of balance and composition.

If you get these right (and there are still plenty of photographers out there who can), you simply don’t need to rely on your computer to create a good image. In fact for most nature photographers, the whole point of the pursuit is the joy of capturing a perfect moment using only patience, skill and timing.

Technology is amazing. Using software, you can take the sky from one photo, put it behind the foreground from another photo, and add a few birds flying past for good measure. In the case of my photo, perhaps you could add a kangaroo into your beach photo. The point is, why would you, when there is so much satisfaction in finding that beach, and being there to capture the moment for real.

The truly wonderful thing about nature photography is that it can remind us of all the things we love about nature. It helps us to appreciate what is at stake as environmental issues come to the fore, and often (like my kangaroo on the beach) it allows us to see the natural world from a point of view that we never knew existed. Old school nature photographers like me don’t want you to look at a photo and see only the technology that produced it. They want you to remember what it is we love about nature, and perhaps pause to appreciate the skill and artistry of the photographer.

So the next time you see a great nature photo, show some respect for the patience and skills that went in to capturing that image. And if you aspire to one day do the same, try thinking a little less about your computer and a little more about nature. It can only make you a better photographer.
